Your iPhone won’t start anymore. Or the iPhone won’t turn on after an empty battery. What can you do? In this blog, you can read what reasons this can have and how to solve it.
Your iPhone is no longer responding.
It can happen that your iPhone does nothing anymore. Your iPhone does not start up. Or your iPhone turns off and does not turn on anymore. Annoying, but it does not necessarily mean that it is broken. Here are the most common reasons for an iPhone that does not turn on and what you can do about it.
The iPhone is unresponsive.
Is your iPhone still on? But it doesn’t respond anymore? Then you need to hard reset it. Here’s how:
- Press and release the volume up button.
- Press and release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Your iPhone will now restart.
iPhone won’t turn on after battery drain.
A common reason for an iPhone not turning on is a dead battery. The phone does not respond when you hold down the power button. Try charging the iPhone and then turn it on.
Charging failed.
When the battery is empty, you need to charge your iPhone. But what if charging fails and your iPhone won’t turn on? First, check if the charging cable is properly connected. Is it? Then it could be your connector.
Sometimes there is dust in the dock connector. Try to gently remove the dust with a toothpick and then try to charge it again. If the problem persists, the dock connector may be defective and you will need to repair it.
iPhone freezes after booting.
Does your iPhone turn on but won’t boot any further? Try restoring your iPhone. You’ll need a computer and a lightning cable. That’s the cable from your charger. When you first connect your iPhone to a computer, you’ll need to confirm that you trust the computer.
- On your iPhone, tap Trust and open your phone with the passcode.
- Then, on a Mac running macOS Catalina, open the Finder.
- On a PC or Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier, open iTunes.
Then you do this:
- Press and release the volume up button.
- Press and release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the side button.
- Do you see the recovery mode screen? Choose Update if you can restore or update the phone.
The power button is not working.
Are you unable to turn on your iPhone because the on/off button is broken? Then you have no other option than to request a repair. Without this button, your iPhone will no longer turn on.
Your screen is broken.
Do you feel your iPhone vibrate or make a sound when you turn it on? But you don’t see anything on the screen? Then the screen may be broken. In that case, you will also need to repair the phone. You can then take it to an Apple Store or look for an expert who replaces an iPhone screen.
There is water damage.
Another problem that may cause your iPhone to stop turning on: water damage. A new iPhone can withstand water well. It can certainly withstand a rain shower. But when you use it for a while, that protection diminishes. And if you then jump into the water with your iPhone in your swimming trunks, it can break. Then the battery no longer works or the motherboard is broken. The only thing you can do then is to hand it in for repair.
An iPhone that suddenly turns off and then won’t turn on again could be the result of water damage.
What if your iPhone isn’t working properly at all?
Can you turn on your iPhone, but does it often freeze? Or does it respond very slowly? You can also reset your iPhone to factory settings. This will restore your phone to its original settings. Please note: this will also delete all your personal information from your phone, such as WhatsApp conversations, apps, and emails.
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to General.
- Scroll down and tap Transfer or reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If you get a warning box, tap Clear Now.
- Enter your passcode and tap Erase iPhone.
